There are events happing all over the world to celebrate Mardi Gras on 17 February 2015.
"Mardi Gras" is a French term and literally means "Fat Tuesday." This is because it is the last day before fasting starts for Lent, and everyone has a big party and "pigs" out on yummy things.
Traditionally, it is the last day for Christians (who celebrate this) to indulge - and often overindulge - before Ash Wednesday starts the sober weeks of fasting that come with Lent. Formally known as Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras has long been a time of extravagant fun for European Christians!
