Cache Of The Month

Every month we call for nominations for cache of the month.  Keep an eye on our newsletter to see what each month's theme is, and who the previous deserving winners are.

COTM - February 2021

There are some truly adventurous caches out there.  You might have to climb a tree above where your ladder can reach, swim the ocean, crawl up a stormwater pipe, explore a cave, paddle up a river, get hung upside down in a manhole, go underwater, or abseil down a mountain to get that elusive smiley.  In February we celebrated geocaching adventures by asking for nominations for your Favourite Caching Adventure is.

The Cache of the Month for February goes to an awesome adventure down in Mossel Bay called St Blaize Sea Cave by local legend TEAM SCHUTTE of Up the Rabbit Hole fame.  The cache is done as part of a series of caches along the 13km St Blaze Trail between Mossel Bay and Dana Bay.  You can do it on its own, but it would still be a 5km return walk, so come prepared.

COTM - January 2021

The logbook inside a cache is just as important as the cache container itself.  For FTF hunters opening a crisp fresh log sheet with no name on it is probably more exciting than finding the container. Log sheets consist of formal log sheets, strips cut from note pads, little notebooks, and sometimes just a shop till slip used as a replacement log. Sometimes you find a very unique logbook though and that is what we celebrated in January.

The Cache of the Month for January goes to PE cacher PipiBibi's 20/20 Vision in Port Alfred.  Nominated by Orosman who said - "I have been to the cache twice (once for myself and once for another cacher) The logbook is a glasses case complete with glasses and cleaning cloth, the actual logbook is the cleaning cloth itself and is very unique", the cache just edged Ready. Steady, Go on the South Coast.

COTM - December 2020

For the second month in a row, it was a close race for the Cache of the Month with the result hanging in the balance right down to the last vote.  This month it was all about Adventure Lab Caches, something that has boomed since HQ has decided to allocate these previously very rare cache type to qualifying cachers.

The COTM for December goes to Orosman's Johannesburg Golden Mile that just got its nose in front of an ALC from Pretoria and one each from PE and East London.  The adventure runs along the heart of Johannesburg's corporate mining district through an open-air museum and gives you the opportunity to learn a bit more of the area's gold history.

COTM - November 2020

There was a time when Virtual Caches were few and far apart with only odd ones scattered around the major centres. Then HQ surprised everybody with an extremely limited first batch of Virtual Caches and followed that up mid-2019 with the second batch of only 4000 Virtuals being allocated worldwide.  This meant that Geocachers who received them had the opportunity to showcase locations that wouldn't necessarily be suited for a physical container.  It was these series 2.0 virtuals that we celebrated in November.

The November Cache of the Month goes to Letaba's Elephants (GC88Z80). After a close race between this Kruger Park virtual and two others in Cape Town and Durban respectively, this virtual at the Letaba Elephant Hall placed by Bouts777 took the honours. With 10 FP from 30 finds it's a popular one with finders and shows off Kruger's "Magnificent Seven", elephants that each had tusks that weighed in at over 50 kilograms.

COTM - October 2020

In October we celebrated the wonderful Hotels where the TBs and Geocoins were kept safe during the lock down. Now that the local travel limitations have been lifted and international borders are opening a little bit, these little travellers can dust themselves off and pack their bags again to continue their travels through the world from cache to cache.

The COTM for October 2020 is awarded to Port Elizabeth Beachfront TB Hotel (GC558ZR). Apart from the wonderful beaches and historical sites in the Friendly City, this TB Hotel is a must visit location for any visitor to Port Elizabeth. This cache was created in May 2014 by FireflyAfrica and has become a famous Geocaching landmark in the Eastern Cape. The cache is well worth a visit by geocachers as well as TBs and Geocoins.

COTM - August 2020

The COTM for August 2020 is awarded to Kaalvoetvrou GCPC9K. This cache is situated near a monument commemorating the role of women in the early history of South Africa. This cache placed in June 2005 by GlobalRat not only celebrates history but will reward your search with awesome, breath-taking views of the northern region of the Drakensberg.

These experiences have inspired geocachers to generously award Favourite Points to this cache, which boasts a 74% FP ratio. No doubt a cache to seek out on your geocaching adventures in KwaZulu-Natal now that the lock down limits are being eased.

COTM - July 2020

During July 2020 we called on your more adventurous geocaching exploits for nominations for the COTM.  A number of very challenging caches were nominated and in the end the COTM title for July 2020 was awarded to The Hardest Cache on Table Mountain GC2QV6C. This D5/T5 cache placed by Col_Mustard on Table Mountain is a firm favourite with geocachers willing to engage in the technical rock climbing or abseiling required to sign the log. This is a geocache which you do not want to set out to without remembering your pen!!

COTM - April 2020

The COTM for April 2020 is Irene Concentration Camp Cemetery (GC7B6N6), a cache by rodnjoan. One of the great joys of Geocaching is the fun you have as a Cache Owner to read an inspired log that shares the enjoyment that the finder had during the search and find of the cache. Even if you are not the CO you can share in this joy as the logs are available for all to read. This month's winner was awarded the prize thanks to the very entertaining log (log part 2) written by Henzz. This is but one of the entertaining logs written by this geocacher over the years.
Sharing our experiences of the game through our logs is one of the fulfilling parts of our wonderful game. Here are two further examples of very entertaining logs for your reading pleasure: Firstly, the muggle log (and muggle log part 2) describing a muggle journalist’s experience at the Sani Pass Event (GC3AYR5) in 2012. Secondly another example of a Henzz log (Henzz log part 2), this log was submitted on the Psalm 119 (GC2Y5F2) cache. We are not suggesting that all logs need to be dissertation length logs, but next time that you find a geocache, consider sharing a bit more of your experience rather than only posting TFTC.
