Big Event 2018 UpdateThe first was 2012 in Pretoria, then it was 2014 in Durban and last year was Cape Town. What am I referring to, you may ask? Those were Mega Events held in South Africa. A Mega Event is a gathering of in excess of 500 geocachers drawn from all over to celebrate geocaching, meet new people and hopefully experience the diversity of the Geocaching community. Next year on 29 and 30 September 2018, GoSA is hosting an event GC7DAJM “2018 Jolly Jozi Jol”. Currently it is just listed as an ordinary event (with 121 will attends at the time of going to press) but should there be sufficient interest as a result of will attend logs, then Geocaching HQ may grant it Mega status. But come what may, it should be a great time of networking with other geocachers. So book it in your next year’s diary (which you may not even have yet) and make a date to come celebrate together. There will be something for everybody to enjoy and more importantly lots of new quality caches to find. Make a start and log your will attend and who knows, we may get Mega status yet and we look forward to seeing you all there. Bruce Pantland on behalf of GoSA and the community volunteers. |

It's all about the Numbers(...and the Geocachers)Geocaching is all about finding geocaches, isn't it. But that is not all, it is also about your own personal statistics (everyone caches for different reasons, and measures their own success in their own way, whether it is how many they have found, how long their daily streak is, or how many T5 caches they have found).
But it is also about more than that, it is about the community of geocachers that support the game to, organising events, hiding caches and assisting newbies to find their way in the game. There are some useful places to get more information about the community and local statistics. Visit the SA Geocaching Statistics page on the Groundspeak forums to see a whole lot of interesting stats about South African geocaching, or visit our list of Regional Facebook pages to connect with other geocachers in your area. |
