Happy New Year

We hope that all our readers have had a wonderful end to 2018, and are ready for a fantastic new year in 2019, that includes many geocaches, souvenirs, favourite points and events. Speaking of events and souvenirs, we are sure most of you managed to earn your Thanks 2018 and the Hello 2019 souvenirs by attending events or finding geocaches on 31 December and 1 January. The New Year has also started with plenty of opportunities to meet other geocachers, with 25 events already scheduled for January across the country.

2018 GeoStatistics

For those of you who don't follow the Groundspeak Geocaching Forums, one of the South African based forums is the Geocaching Statistics forum. Some recent posts by our local stats guru, Danie Viljoen, tells us that during 2018 there were 1 969 new geocaches published in South Africa, and 124 937 finds logged during 2018. That is an average of 342 finds being logged every day.

Cache of the Month

2019's first COTM award goes to a very special cache hidden in 2018. Virtual Reward: Madiba Jive is this month's COTM. 2018 saw many new virtuals being hidden as part of the Virtual Reward initiative by Geocaching HQ and this one brings you to a special spot in Sandton, Johannesburg.

February's COTM we go back to general nominations. Please nominate any cache that you think deserves the title of COTM. Email your submissions to to .

ChrisDen's USA Adventure

ChrisDen is one of South Africa's most prolific geocaching teams, and they recently went to the USA on a trip that ended with them finding 1 658 geocaches across 4 countries in 3 continents after traveling a total cache to cache distance of 51 475km.
