Unique Souvenirs - 2020

Everyone is settling into the new year, January is behind us, and time to look forward to the rest of the year and see what Groundspeak has planned for 2020.

They have already announced that during 2020 they will allow some geocachers to host Community Celebration Events in 2020. These events will enable cachers around the world to commemorate the 20th anniversary of geocaching with a new icon and souvenir.

This cache type was originally known as the Lost and Found Event Cache. It was created for events that were hosted by geocachers from April 30, 2010 to May 3, 2010 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of geocaching. Just 362 Lost and Found Events were held, so a very limited number of cachers earned the icon.

For 2020, they are planning on allocating out 20 200 of these events, and the first batch has been allocated, so hopefully there will be one near you soon. More events will be allocated every month, and to check if you are eligible to host one, head over to the Official Blog and check for yourself, and you can apply to be a host there too.

The full list of events already published is available at this link. Check back here regularly to find one near you.

You can also check out all the 2020 souvenir dates planned already here.

Unique Souvenirs - February

There are also two unique souvenir opportunities during February.

The first is the “Fun in all directions” souvenir.  With over 3 million geocaches worldwide, geocaching is fun in all directions. That’s why Groundspeak is celebrating 02.02.2020, an international palindrome date, with a new souvenir. On Sunday February 2, 2020, find any geocache, Adventure Lab or attend any event to earn the “Fun in all directions” souvenir. You will be awarded the souvenir as soon as you record your find/attended log online. Find out more here.

Secondly, Groundspeak are planning something special for the 29th February, as Leap Day creates another unique geocaching opportunity, but they haven't announced exactly what they have up their sleeve yet other than another souvenir will be available.

The Bay Cache Bash

Also remember that the Eastern Cape community is hosting the next big event in September 2020, and GC8G0ZR - The Bay Cache Bash has already been published and achieved 172 Will Attends at the time of this newsletter going to press.  If you want to join a fun filled weekend (if not longer) with fellow geocachers from across the country, start planning your trip now, you have plenty of notice.

If we can get enough people heading to this event, it creates a unique opportunity for another Mega event for South African geocachers.

Cache of the Month

February's Cache of the Month called for nominations for the best event of 2019. We are pleased to announce that Nothing GRANDER than a day on the MEANDER, created by a group calling themselves The KZN Fun committee, has won this COTM. This event had it all, with a series of innovative caches and other various challenges, and everyone had a fantastic day out.
Next month we will be looking to award the Cache of the Month to any cache you believe is deserving of the title, so nominate those great containers, challenging puzzles or interesting multi-caches. Please send your nominations to .

Mega Merchandise

The GoSA Store still has some Jozi Jol Mega 2018 Silver Geocoins for sale, you can place your order online.  We also have some stock of geocoins from the previous Mega events available.

There is some merchandise from the Jozi Jol Mega 2018 left, check the GoSA Store for details of what is still available.

We are always on the lookout for photos from events or cool caches, as well as any fun, interesting, unusual or exciting geocaching stories to share with the geocaching community.  If you want to share yours, send it to us by emailing it to our webmasters.
