    All About The Numbers

We all know that geocaching is about the numbers and the statistics as much as it is about the finds, isn't it?  We asked our own South African stats guru, Danie Viljoen, to share some of his recent analysis with us.

    Cache densities in Africa
It is one thing to know that South Africa currently has 14117 caches and say Egypt has 286. But how do they really compare if one takes their cache densities into account? The following map shows the cache density for the whole continent (and surrounding islands) with a 5km resolution:
The real stars here are South Africa (at this resolution the highest density in Africa is in Port Elizabeth) and a number of the islands: primarily the Canary Islands and Madeira.

    Favourite caches
Which South African caches got the most new favourite points during the last year?

GC Code  Cache Name Owner  New FPs
GC31WXR  Table Mountain Travel Bug Hotel CapeDoc  66 FPs
GC5Y00Q  Tardis family Behrens   57 FPs
GC5BWV4   UP PERISCOPE family Behrens  39 FPs
GC5D3BX  The Vault Henzz  38 FPs
    GC548HP  Intersect 2.0 family Behrens  32 FPs
GC60190  Signal the frog books his Licence  family Behrens  28 FPs
GC5KD22  Geocacher By Night family Behrens  27 FPs

GC51P0R  Muzzle loading Gun family Behrens  23 FPs
GCVDHN  Sailors' Star vespax  22 FPs

There can be little doubt that family Behrens is doing something special with their hides – they own 6 of the current top 10 caches in South Africa!

Nelson Mandela Bay Annual Caching Weekend

The weekend of 24 to 26 February saw event GC6XE7Y, the 3rd annual NMB Caching weekend away, organised by PumTim and KitchenBoss. This year the event was held at the inniKloof camp site in the Gamtoos Valley.

Once again this event was well supported with teams arriving from Cape Town, the Garden Route and East London to complement a number of more local teams from NMB and its surrounds.

Approximately 40 new caches were placed in the area with a wide variety of cache types. As has become the norm at this event, it was possible to grab eight icons over the weekend.

Cachers started arriving early with iPajero, Strandlopers w&e and k j being some of the first to park their vans and put up their tents. Most of the rest arrived on Friday afternoon with some Cape Town teams arriving late after a full day’s caching en-route to inniKloof.

The main task for Saturday was to tackle the long walk to the inniKloof Waterfall cache (GC6BNN3). A good 7km (14km round trip) walk up a mountain, along the ridge and then down an almost vertical descent to a magnificent waterfall. Luckily the weather played along and we had a cool overcast day during a week that had seen temperatures in the upper 30’s.

On arrival we were faced with a D4.5 container hidden by plainoldgraham, but that was only second priority as the first priority was to swim in the cool water and admire the magnificent waterfall. The fit people found it as they left almost at the same time as the not so fit arrived at the waterfall. The group really got spread out. Farm owner John acted as a magnificent guide on the trail and made sure everyone got there and back safely. The walk is well worth your while with some magnificent scenery along the trail. The waterfall at the end is the cherry on the top.

While most of the group sweated their way to the waterfall some teams decided to rather cache locally. The Capetonians drove through to Port Elizabeth to grab as many caches as they could.

Both Friday and Saturday evening saw a huge fire being made in the communal fire pit and lots of caching stories were told over a few beers and glasses of wine. In fact, the few glasses of wine might have been the cause of the serenading of some of the chalets late on Saturday evening (or was it Sunday morning?).

Congratulations to the organisers. Another successful one. Looking forward to next year!

    Big Blue Switch Souvenir

Geocaching has evolved, and so have geocachers. On May 2nd, Groundspeak is celebrating the 17th anniversary of the birth of geocaching with a Big Blue Switch souvenir! Find any geocache or attend any event on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 and you’ll earn a new digital souvenir for your geocaching profile!

What is “Big Blue Switch” day?
On May 2, 2000, just past midnight, the U.S government discontinued its use of Selective Availability in order to make GPS more responsive to civil and commercial users worldwide. Twenty-four satellites around the globe processed their new orders, and instantly the accuracy of GPS technology improved tenfold. Tens of thousands of GPS receivers around the world had an instant upgrade. Prior to this date, only the military had the ability to receive accurate GPS readings. Now, the world and all its wonderful people could pinpoint their precise location. For reasons unknown, this is often referred to as the flipping of the “Big Blue Switch”.

The very next day, a computer consultant named Dave Ulmer hid a black bucket in the woods near Portland, Oregon. Along with a logbook and pencil, he left various prize items including videos, books, software, and a slingshot, then posted the coordinates online.

Three days later, the container was located by Mike Teague. Now, seventeen years later, geocaching has become a global phenomenon to get off the couch and get outside.

The game has evolved, and so have geocachers: In the past 17 years, geocachers have reached many milestones including 3 million active geocaches, 7 million active geocachers, and over 22 million awarded favorite points. The Big Blue Switch souvenir is one more way to celebrate the evolution of geocaching!

    Three Million!

Geocaching reached a major milestone during April 2017.  Three million active geocaches.  A big thank you to all the cache owners that helped this be achieved.

    Border Camping Weekend

The Camping Weekend 2017 Areena Riverside Resort (GC6ZWE2) event was held from the 24th to the 26th March and is the third camping weekend that has been held in the East London area, with the first being way back in February 2009, Camp & Cache by iNokia (GC1KVK9).

The weather for the weekend did not look too promising as we woke up to rain on Friday morning but fortunately by mid morning it had stopped and it held off for the weekend. Kingrobert from Port Elizabeth had arrived on Wednesday, then slowly the rest of those attending arrived. In the meantime two potjiekos pots, one a lamb and bean pot and the other one a chicken and mushroom were being prepared on Friday for those attending the camping weekend. Although there was a little rain in the evening this did not dampen the spirits as everyone huddled under the awning and gazebo to share the potjiekos. The one pot was scraped clean and precious little left in the other so it appeared that it was enjoyed by all. After much geocaching talk and socializing every one retired for the night to get some rest for the day that lay ahead.

On Saturday morning the two teams from Port Elizabeth, Kingrobert and NaviMate, one cacher from Pretoria mart514 and nine local teams got together to solve the 20 Geo-Art caches that had just been published. Firstly we must say a big thank you to Pte Curb for reviewing and publishing the caches as requested. As geocachers we are deeply indebted to our South African reviewers who devote so much of their time to ensuring that we have the pleasure of enjoying geocaching. The Geo-Art series was based on two of East London’s historic claims “The world’s only surviving Dodo Egg and the discovery of the prehistoric Coelacanth”. Once the puzzles were solved the teams departed to find these geocaches culminating in finding the Dodo Egg and the Prehistoric Coelacanth final bonus caches. From the logs it can be seen that much fun and learning was experienced by the geocachers. Quotes from two logs “Lots of time and effort went into this Geo-Art and we are so lucky to have such great historical finds in our back yard” and ”Plenty of research and preparation for this very informative and historical significant series and the first Geo-Art in East London.

On Saturday evening a communal braai was organized and while we waited for the coals to be ready we were treated to an amazing fire-dance display by teams Monti’s Adventure and Jou Doring. Monti’s Adventure also produced and handed out some great wooden geocoins/tags commemorating the weekend. Thanks too to NaviMate who sponsored bottles of water for Saturday’s geocaching and pineapples to enjoy with our braai.

Sunday morning saw another 15 caches published, 10 in the Insect Series and 5 other, so it was a quick pack-up to get on their way to find these caches.

In conclusion I think this local WhatsApp post sums up the weekend that was had by all “It was such a fun weekend with cool caches. Thank you team iPajero for organizing, catering, hiding and making this weekend all in all FANTASTIC”.

Meet the Reviewers - Part III

Pte Curb, Afrika Rocks and ROTSIP, the three South African reviewers

We wrap up our Meet the Reviewers series this month with ROTSIP (aka Rodney Pistorius).  Rodney finds geocaches as part of rodnjoan together with his wife Joan, and has been doing this since December 2005.  A close family friend of theirs, “greengrass.j”, got a hand held GPS for use when participating in activities of the 4x4 off-road club he belonged to, heard of geocaching and started geocaching with the other club members. He explained geocaching to rodnjoan who decided to purchase a GPS and start geocaching. 10 years later, rodnjoan are one of the few South African teams to have more than 6 000 finds.

Rodney was asked by Groundspeak in March 2010 to become a reviewer, and after agreeing, his profile ROTSIP (part of his surname in reverse) was registered.  Retired from his full time job as an engineering and operations manager since 2009, Rodney participates in various activities (such as University of the 3rd Age and travel club meetings) in addition to the usual routine tasks associated with home, garden and pool maintenance when not reviewing.  Reviewing takes up on average 30-50 hours per week of his time.

We asked Rodney to share some of his experience with our readers:
GoSA: What do you enjoy about reviewing?
ROTSIP: All aspects are enjoyable. The checking of listings for compliance with the guidelines, interacting with Cache Owners (CO's), advising CO's on how non-compliant listings can be adjusted to get them compliant, providing links to relevant information on the Internet, explaining how information should be interpreted, asking questions to get a better insight that helps with evaluation, interacting with the other reviewers to establish a consensus of opinion about specific listings that have issues, regarding how they should be handled, asking the Volunteer Support group personnel at Groundspeak for advice and guidance when necessary, etc., etc.  The least enjoyable aspect is the need to deal with friction that sometimes arises.

GoSA: What advice do you have for new geocachers?
ROTSIP: They should participate in geocaching for long enough to gain an understanding of the activity by finding existing caches, before considering placing new caches. (The guidelines recommend at least 20 caches). They should attend social events so that they can meet other cachers and interact with them and learn from each other by sharing experiences. They should read the rules and guidelines to get an understanding of what geocaching is about and how and why the various activities should be performed. They need to read and understand the rules and guidelines as well as the terms of use, before they 'tick the boxes' that confirm that they understand and agree to what is specified. Feel free to ask any questions that you might have. If I don't have an answer I will make the necessary enquiries to get an answer.

GoSA: What advice do you have for geocachers who have placed a hide and are about to submit their listing?
ROTSIP: Before submitting a listing, they should read the rules guidelines and terms of agreement, to ensure that the actual placement of the physical elements and the compilation of the listing complies with the requirements. They should provide sufficient information in a Reviewer Note (RN), to enable the reviewer to effectively evaluate all aspects of the cache placement, and the compiled listing. They should also ensure that the RN includes information that is specified as being required, for the specific type of cache that is to be submitted.

GoSA: Why don’t you go for FTF’s?
ROTSIP: Being First To Find is not that high on our priority list. It cannot be said that I don't go for any FTF's. As a player my wife sometimes asks me to join her seeking a FTF and in terms of our agreed 'Code of Conduct' there are no restrictions on reviewers seeking FTF's on Traditional type caches. There are restrictions on reviewers seeking FTF's on Mystery/Puzzle caches and Multi-caches because it might be perceived that a reviewer could have an advantage over other cachers, to find these, because of possible 'inside information'. On occasions when we are part of a group seeking newly published listings, we do sometimes log FTF's as part of a 'Group FTF'

We checked how many geocaches had been published by Rodney, and more than 7 000 of the South African ones listed since 2010 were published by him, that’s a lot of reviewing!

We are always on the lookout for photos from events or cool caches, as well as any fun, interesting, unusual or exciting geocaching stories to share with the geocaching community.  If you want to share yours, send it to us by emailing it to our webmasters.

    Down Time

It's the end of another year.  Travelling somewhere new?  Take the chance to go geocaching.  Travelling somewhere you have been to before?  Take the chance to go geocaching.  Stuck at home with some annoying family?  Take the chance to go geocaching.  Holding the fort at work?  Sneak out early and ... yes.... take the chance to go geocaching.

Whatever you are doing this festive season, GoSA wishes you a fantastic festive season, travel safely and make sure you find some geocaches.  Hopefully you also get a chance to attend one of the many events to celebrate the end of the year and the start of another one.

    Service Time

It is the responsibility of any cache owner to maintain their geocaches.  One of the volunteer reviewers has started a process to work through all the disabled caches and those with long strings of needs maintenance or DNF logs.

Should you be contacted about any of your geocaches, we encourage you to work with them, and arrange to either maintain your geocache, or archive it and remove any remnants that may be at ground zero.  At the end of this process, old geocaches owned by inactive geocachers should be removed from the game, opening those areas for active cachers and making it less likely to get DNF's.

Did you manage to get to one of the GIFF screenings and watch the films and earn the souvenir?

If not, you can now watch the entire film reel here.

At the recent GoSA AGM the new committee for 2017 was elected.  The committee is:
    Chairman - Erik Lear (Fier)
    Treasurer - Lucia Rodrigues (LuciaMPR)
    Secretary - Claudia Magno (ClodsM)
Member - Bruce Pantland (Pte Curb)
    Member - Graham Thomas (ThomasFamilyZA)

    Cache of the Month

We are excited to reveal a special addition to the monthly newsletter for 2018!

Do you know of a cache that is worthy of the title of Cache of the Month? Please nominate it for the GoSA Cache of the Month for January 2018 by emailing the details (name, GC code) as well as a justification as to what makes it so amazing. You can send your nominations to .

Please note that you cannot nominate a geocache that you own. The GoSA committee will decide on the winner each month and the criteria for each month's Cache of the Month may change. We will announce the criteria for the upcoming month in the preceeding month's newsletter.

The owner of the selected Cache of the Month will be notified and sent a badge which they can add to their cache description.

    Big Event 2018 Update

Next year on 29 and 30 September 2018, GoSA is hosting an event GC7DAJM “2018 Jolly Jozi Jol”. Currently it is just listed as an ordinary event (with 145 will attends at the time of going to press) but should there be sufficient interest as a result of will attend logs, then Geocaching HQ may grant it Mega status. But come what may, it should be a great time of networking with other geocachers.

So book it in your next year’s diary (which you may not even have yet) and make a date to come celebrate together. There will be something for everybody to enjoy and more importantly lots of new quality caches to find. Geocaching Badges, Bunny Chows and more…

From the Desk of the Chairman

Who would have thought we’d be halfway through the year already? Having been smacked with lockdown level four, I’m hoping everybody is keeping safe and healthy. Earlier in June, I had the pleasure of joining the Pretoria community at an event which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I had hoped to explore a bit of the Northern Cape later this month, but I believe it’s better to stay away from travel for the time being. From the perspective of the GoSA committee, we, like many of you, are gutted at the compelled cancellation of the Bay Cache Bash. Working closely with the organising committee, we had set ourselves a date of 30 June to reach the magical 300 mark to obtain mega status. Many of you would even have received personal messages alerting you to the event as well as other aspects of GoSA.

When 2021 started, we were feeling hopeful that COVID19 would be a thing of the past before the event. With the rise in infections, increased level of lockdown and the like, it was decided that it would be better to avoid complications and risk of infections with all indications showing that COVID19 will be a problem in South Africa for some time still.

I must thank and commend Jonker Fourie (FireflyAfrica) for his and his team’s tireless work and effort getting the balls rolling only for them to be ditched before the event. It’s most appreciated that we have passionate people in our community willing to dedicate their time for the greater good.

I’m also grateful to the contributions being made to the newsletter. We started the year trying to bring the community together and reading stories, seeing pictures, and even watching the occasional video makes me realise we’re on the right foot.

Be safe while caching out there and I look forward to seeing all your #GeocachingSouthAfrica photos!
    Geocaching: Cubs and Scouts Badges

Did you know that both Cubs and Scouts in South Africa can earn badges for geocaching? We have many members of the geocaching community that are also involved in cubs and/or scouts, some of whom were instrumental in getting these badges approved by Scouts SA.

We also have a few geocaching kids in the community who have, proudly, earned these badges and in their own small way have contributed to the growth of the caching community. Well done to the next generation of cachers for helping to grow the community!

If you’d like to read up on any of the information relating to these badges please visit Cubs Geocaching Badge; Geocaching Scout Craft Badge; Geocaching Scout Interest Badge

We would like to put a call out to all our geocaching members of the cubs and scouting community - please share your stories with us of how you have earned your badges or how members of your troop have earned their badges. We would love to feature some of these stories in our next newsletter.

    Bunny Chow Fridays

    By waydom

There is nothing as quintessentially KZN-caching related as the BCF or Bunny Chow Friday Event Cache. There are few things that beat a tasty quarter mutton bunny, a cold beverage, and some geo-chatter to see in the weekend.

Did you know: The first official BCF event was held on the 11th October 2013 and was hosted by the official “father of the BCF”, Peter (TechnoNut) Tiedt. (GC4NY9R) The event was held in the Britannia Hotel and the narrative for that cache has become the event description for most of the approximately seventy BCFs held to date:

    The History of Bunny Chow
The bunny chow was created in Durban, home to a large community of people of Indian origin. The precise origins of the food are disputed, although its creation has been dated to the 1940s. It was also sold in Gwelo, Rhodesia, during WWII and is still sold in the nearby town of Kadoma, formerly known as Gatooma.

One story which provides an etymology for bunny chow has it that a restaurant run by people known as Banias (an Indian caste) first created the scooped-out bread and curry dish at a restaurant-cum-cafe called Kapitan's on the corner of Victoria and Albert streets in Durban. The food was a means to serve take-aways to excluded people. During the apartheid regime, Indians were not allowed in certain shops and cafes and so the shop owners found a way of serving the people through back windows, etc. This was an easy and effective way to serve the workers. The traditional Indian meal was roti and beans, however rotis tended to fall apart as a take-away item. So, they cut out the centre portion of the bread and filled it with curry and capped the filling with the portion that was cut out.

Another story of the bunny chow's origin is that, as in India, merchants who traditionally sold their wares under the 'bania' tree (also known as the banyan, or Ficus bengalensis) were called 'bania'. The use of this name is known in India going back to antiquity.

Stories of the origin of bunny chow date as far back as the migrant Indian workers arrival in South Africa. One account suggests that Indian migrant workers from India who were brought to South Africa to work the sugar cane plantations of Kwazulu-Natal (Port Natal) required a way of carrying their lunches to the field; a hollowed-out loaf of bread was a convenient way to transport their vegetarian curries. Meat based fillings came later. The use of a loaf of bread can also be ascribed to the lack of the traditional roti bread, in the absence of which a loaf of bread would be acceptable as an accompaniment to curry.

I recall my first bunny chow event. it was held at the “Look Out bar” in Glen Ashley – not specifically a bunny chow venue but certainly close enough for me to be able to make it there and back to the office in a reasonable time. It was back in 2014 and I had told Dom that we couldn’t possibly go to the event before finding at least 100 caches as we didn’t want the “veterans” to think that we were newbies!

I still recall sitting next to Beetles and Bentleys with my notebook out, making notes of peoples handles and corresponding names because a number of people exclusively made use of handles – super confusing for the newbie in awe of all these “big name” cachers with thousands of finds to their names.

My fears of being mocked or laughed at for our relatively low find total were soon allayed as we were welcomed into the midst of a number of likeminded, friendly strangers who shared a passion for this bizarre hobby which had taken hold of my free time (and some of my not-so-free time).

Pic. Post Lock-down Bunny in the Park (held 12 June 2021)

I soon learned that the only reason that one might get a bit of good old-fashioned “chirping” is if you decide to tackle your bunny with a knife and fork!

If you are in KZN and a weekend is nearby, keep an eye out for a possible “BCF” (or “BCFOS” – Bunny Chow Friday on a Saturday) near you!

    Geocaching Adventures

    By Adventure_T

Pause for a moment, think about when was the last time you experienced the thrill of an adventure? When last did your heartbeat escalate in anticipation of something new? When were you drawn into a challenge that took you out of your comfort zone, and made you forget about everything else?

That is the power of a geocaching adventure! Anticipation, struggle, success, unforgettable memories.

So, what is a geocaching adventure and what makes them unforgettable?

“Adventure” is defined in the dictionary as “an unusual and exciting or daring experience.”

A geocaching adventure is generally planned beforehand, with excitement building as the anticipation grows for the big day. There is also sometimes a tinge of danger, and often, things don’t go according to plan…

Whether you are planning to summit a mountain, wander through a forest, explore a cave, discover a hidden spot near to you, or whatever takes you outside of your comfort zone - that’s where the adventure happens. But let’s face it, not all geocaching adventures have to be dangerous, where you fear for your life. Adventure is more about attitude. It’s about having the courage to try something new, or go somewhere you haven’t gone before, or do something in a way that you haven’t done before. It’s about you, stepping out of your comfort zone and choosing to walk a different path. Adventure requires some bravery.

The purpose of this bimonthly article is:
    • To inspire you to try new things.
    • To give you a sense of achievement and create memories.
    • To prove that anyone can have a geocaching adventure.
    • To show, through stories, that having geocaching adventures adds colour to your life.
    • And to demonstrate how you can create the types of adventures that suit you.
Adventure is taking each experience, whether you know the ending or not, and tackling it head-on. It’s about looking at the world from a different perspective. It’s choosing to see the beauty in the mundane and finding ways to do it differently.

Some of my favourite geocaching adventures include climbing Devil’s Peak in what became a misty day, when I could just see the rock hiding the cache, and then a misty drop off into nothing.

Also a time when I was hanging on the end of a rope, while trying to read coordinates on the sheer rock at my feet; and finally, finding the oldest active cache in SA (Sentinel View) with my wife on our 21st wedding anniversary.

So, you are now officially challenged to go out there and have an adventure. If you survive, please send in your story and it could be featured in our bimonthly Geocaching Adventures article.

It is with sadness and disappointment that the organising committee of The Bay Cache Bash in Port Elizabeth has to announce the cancelation of the 2021 event due to COVID-19.

In the light of the current third wave, we are entering, and the announcement made last night by the president, the decision was made for us. At this stage indications are that this third wave could last two months and that leaves less than a month before the event has to take place. Already we have seen that a lot of cachers are wary to travel, don't want to plan their travels too far ahead not knowing what is going to happen or just can't travel due to the current economic climate. This was also visible in the fact that we have been struggling to reach the target of 300 Will Attends within our goal time.

We would like to thank everybody who have logged their Will Attends and showed their support by offering to help where needed. If you were planning to travel to Port Elizabeth we really apologise for the inconvenience, but unfortunately it is out of our hands. Also, a big thank you to the GoSA committee for their support and encouragement the whole time.

As The Bay Cache Bash 2021 has not received Mega status, HQ won't be able to change the date on the listing to 2022. The current listing will thus be archived.

The committee has decided to not commit to a date in 2022 straight away but to first see what the future holds for us and then to get input from the whole Geocaching community before deciding on the next step. Please know that we stay committed to hosting the biggest and best Geocaching event in South Africa right here in Port Elizabeth at some stage in the future. Really hope to see you all in PE at some stage!!!!

    GIFF 2021

Just a reminder that the Geocaching International Film Festival is back! Submissions open on 1 June 2021 and close on 5 August 2021. Who is going to take up the challenge and submit a South African entry?

    MEGA FEEDBACK

So the Mega Event, GC7DAJM 2018 Jolly Jozi Jol is a memory now, but it certainly isn't fading yet.  For those of you able to join us from all over the country (and some from all over the world), thanks for making the trip. It was a day of great adventure, and many interesting stories.  The highlights included having all the South African reviewers on a talk panel (even those not usually based in South Africa).

Afrika Rocks/geoawareAFR (Grant Little), Xanthe Terra (Andre van Vuuren), Knagur Green (Christina van Vuuren), ROTSIP (Rodney Pistorius), Pte Curb (Bruce Pantland)

We performed a CITO with a difference when in addition to cleaning up a bit, we also planted some new trees.

And that was all on top of discovering hundreds of geocoins at the coin fest, as well as finding many awesome geocaches hidden just for the event.

    MEGA STORE

The GoSA Store still has some Mega silver geocoins for sale, you can place your order online.

You Might Be A Geocacher If...

Are you an Adrenaline Junkie? A Caching Connoisseur? A Social Butterfly? A Trackable Lover? Collect them all to be the ultimate geocacher.

In October, you might be a Caching Connoisseur if… you’re all about creativity, the higher the Favourite Points the better, and like a fine wine these quality caches have stood the test of time.

Find out how to earn your October souvenir here.

    Cache of the Month

Multi geocaches are often not found as much as they could be. This cache type and especially this month's COTM which is GC7CKVM Teamwork Puzzles definitely deserves to be found! Well done to TheSchuttes on creating an epic 7 stage multi with unique puzzles at each waypoint.

For the month of November, we will highlight a geocache placed for the recent Mega - Jolly Jozi Jol. Please tell us which Mega JJJ geocache really stood out for you. Please send your nominations to .

    Treasure Hunting For Fun

It is engrained into our psyche to go treasure hunting and if you had any doubt, watch how kids love to go searching for a treasure at parties. The reward one feels when finding a treasure is worth much more than the treasure itself, whether the treasure be pieces of eight, doubloons, alchemical wands or just trinkets.

It is believed that Robert Louis Stevenson was inspired by the notorious Captain William Kidd when writing Treasure Island. Captain Kidd was originally tasked by the English government to rid the waters of pirates and other enemy vessels (such as the French) in the 17th century. His pay would have been half the spoils. He crossed the line from privateer to pirate when he attacked an American vessel, commissioned by an English company, flying a French flag.

When he was finally arrested and tried, Kidd was unwilling to testify against the lords who had originally contributed to his appointment as privateer and furthermore, it was discovered many years later that records which would have saved Kidd’s life were deliberately suppressed. He was sentenced to be hanged on the May 23rd, 1701.  If Jack Sparrow was real, he would have been inspired by how Captain Kidd managed to survive the first two attempts by the executioner because the rope snapped each time. The third attempt was successful.   Captain Kidds’ ship, Adventure Galley, was sunk off the coast of Madagascar, and it has taken 300 years of searching the area for the first 50kg bar of silver to be recovered from the wreck. It was later discovered that this bar of silver was actually mostly lead, and if it was in the Adventure Galley, it might have been there just to help weigh the ship down to sink it. Diving deep into the ocean trying to find a pirate’s treasure is an extreme form of treasure hunting, but finding that bar of lead-infused silver must have been such a thrill for Barry Clifford, the explorer who found it.

A blue Lapis Lazuli was sourced from the foothills of the Himalayas, and a Rutilated Crystal ball was sourced from Brazil.

There have been modern treasure hunts set up by inspired people. My favourite so far is in the category of armchair treasure hunting and is called The Merlin Mystery. Information for this treasure hunt can still be found on the website http://www.treasureclub.net.  The format of this treasure hunt was to purchase the book, find 75 objects in the page borders, get the order of the clues right to work out how to array the objects and then discover what words were used to cast the spell.  What fascinated me most was that the clues were all visual, and there was no need to understand English to solve the puzzle or submit the solution.

The full solution is explained in a multi-page article, available online. The prize was a beautifully designed wand which includes metals and stones sourced from across the world. For example, a blue Lapis Lazuli was sourced from the foothills of the Himalayas, and a Rutilated Crystal ball was sourced from Brazil. The artwork of the wand is magnificent, every little bit has a meaning, and the New Zealand jeweller who acted as the goldsmith had to work for several months to bring it all together. The effort put into crafting the wand seems to mirror the idea that Kell, Blaise and Merlin spent centuries making the wand truly magical with infused Pendragon Alchemy.   When time was nearly up, many people were close to solving the mystery, but in the end, nobody got it correct. The wand was auctioned, and all the prize money was donated to the World Wide Fund for Nature.

There is a modern day treasure hunt using the Internet and GPS receivers that is taking over the world. On May 2nd, 2000, the U.S.A. switched off the scrambling of the GPS signals from 24 satellites and instantaneously, thousands of GPS receivers were vastly more accurate. On May 3rd, 2000, the first stash was placed in a bucket in the woods somewhere in the west of the U.S.A. N 45° 17.460 W 122° 24.800.

This stash is now considered the first geocache hidden and was found a few days later. South Africa has 20 active geocaches which were placed in 2001. There are over 14000 active caches nation-wide and over 3 million world-wide.  Geocaching is a modern blend between screen-time and getting outdoors and feeling the reward of finding the treasure.  Looking up a geocache when travelling can often result in finding a place you would never have known about and even if you did not find the geocache, the place can be a treasure enough. For the more socially inclined geocacher, there are also organised events. Quite often these are just opportunities to sit at a coffee shop or restaurant and discuss the adventures, but other times there are competitions with prizes. In South Africa, an event catering for 500 people has been held every 2 years since 2012.

Online puzzle solving and treasure hunting is becoming more prevalent. In 2012 a complex challenge, that is claimed to be the hardest online challenge, was created by Cicada 3301. Some think that either the Illuminati or the Stone Masons are behind it, but that seems rather unlikely.  I became quite interested in this and had to see what it was about. Because the palindromic prime number 1231507051321 appeared in the puzzle I looked it up to see what the significance was. To my surprise I found a twitter account with that name and I read the only tweet on that account.  Then I started my journey into wonderland.  Incidentally, it was my maiden journey into the dark web, and I emerged a few hours later feeling the victory of being unaffected by this over-stigmatised deep dark place and the uplifting reward of yet another puzzle solved. Other than deciphering computer encodings to solve the puzzle, I learnt all about what onion is and how the Tor Project makes things secure and private … and a little slower.

A story that brings together armchair puzzle solving (by the Armchair Treasure Hunt club), the geocaching community and a real treasure minted in South Africa is about a hunt called Lucky 7. This short story took place in March 2005 and concluded with a lucky participant finding a Kruger Rand.  The only information for the puzzle is the following image:
    LUCKY 7. Puzzle

Many geocachers participated in a forum to share ideas where one can see how the comments progressed from “this can’t be real” to “Yes, I got it!”  The solution (summarised from the treasureclub.com website) is:  The black line leads to the point farthest from the sea (‘C’) within the UK.  The Ordnance Survey mapping of the spot shows the yellow road with a small building at a junction. A little to the south of the crossroad is a footpath and a timber signpost. The signpost is square in cross section and oriented as shown by the black 'point' next to the '7', relative to the road. At the foot of the post, on the south east side (indicated by the arrows), lay the treasure.

Whether one is stuck in an armchair or keen to get outdoors, or if one likes alchemical mysteries or prefer to just find gold, taking on the hobby of treasure hunting does result in personal rewards.

    Let the hunt begin!

    International EarthCache Day

An EarthCache site is a specific geological location that people can visit to learn about a unique geoscience feature or aspect of Earth. Visitors to EarthCache sites can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage resources, and how scientists gather evidence.

Get ready to rock over the entire weekend of Saturday 12 October and Sunday 13 October 2019. Find and log any EarthCache to earn the International EarthCache Day souvenir.

    Geocaching International Film Festival 2019

This year, the GIFF 2019 souvenir weekend will be from November 7 to November 17. That's right, GIFF 2019 will extend over two full weekends!  We are already seeing some events published, as local geocaching communities start planning the popcorn for movie night to watch the best geocaching short films of 2019.

    Adventure Lab Caches

After all the recent activity with new Virtual Caches, we decided this month to highlight another "newish" aspect to Geocaching, Lab Caches.  Although initially allowed only at Mega Events, recently Groundspeak has allowed for some lucky geocachers to also publish their own series of Lab Caches.

Lab Caches are an experimental geocache type that count towards your geocaching statistics and total finds. In contrast to other cache types, Lab Caches are not required to have a container and can also be located indoors. This allows Lab Cache owners to innovate and test new ideas to make geocaching even more fun.

Currently there are 3 Adventure Lab Cache series in South Africa:
    • Greensleeves, with 8 locations in Johannesburg
    • Exploring the Cape Town Waterfront, with 9 locations in Cape Town
    • The Company's Garden, with 5 locations in Cape Town

To get the Adventure Lab app for your iOS or Android device, and find these Adventure Lab Caches, visit the Adventure Lab site.

    Cache of the Month

October's Cache of the Month was for the best Earthcache. With 428 Earthcaches in the country (and counting), there's plenty of opportunity to learn about our local geology. We are proud to announce Bokkeveld Fossils, GC336KY as the COTM this month. A unique lesson with fossil hunting involved!

Don't forget that 12 and 13 October is International Earthcache weekend.
Next month we will be back to general nominations so please send your nominations for any cache that you believe deserves the title of Cache of the Month. Please send your nominations to .

    International EarthCache Day

On October 11, you can earn a new souvenir for celebrating the geocaching game board. What’s that, you ask? The whole entire Earth! (and one lonely space station). All you have to do is go out and find an EarthCache on International EarthCache Day.

EarthCaches don’t have physical containers, but instead bring you to a unique location and teach you an earth science lesson. To make the find, you’ll have to check the EarthCache’s description and answer questions based on where you are. You can send your answers to the cache owner via Email or the geocaching.com Message Center.

Visit the search page to find an EarthCache near you, just set the filter to EarthCache and there you have them all.
